Various games can be utilized in therapy to observe a child at play while observing behavior. Board games, clay, puppets, drawing and storytelling allows the child to innocently paint a picture of what he or she is feeling, experienced or observed without directly telling the therapist. These simple games that are being used as therapeutic tools helps with communication by turning fantasy play into reality. This can be used at any age level and modified based on the child’s cognitive development or ability. When working with children who may be challenging, some firmness or directness can be used with children while playing.
Metacommunication is a good technique that allows the child to see patterns and what can be done to change certain behaviors. Therapeutic metaphors and mutual storytelling are also good techniques to use in therapy with children. It allows the child to express himself or herself by interacting with therapist in a not so directive way. These techniques provide the child with some control as well as creativity, which provides openness and comfort as they are more willing to be present with the therapist. This also allows the therapist to build rapport and guide the session without the child becoming suspicious. As a therapist, I have enjoyed utilizing these techniques with children 10 years or younger while being more creative with the older children as they were more interested in board games and various card games.
