For many women, midlife is filled with changing roles. Children become more independent, careers evolve, parents age, relationships shift, and priorities begin to look different.
After years of caring for others, managing responsibilities, and meeting expectations, some women realize they are not entirely sure how they see their next stage. Exploring core values can be an important part of navigating this stage of life.
What Are Core Values?
Core values are the qualities and principles that give our lives direction. They may include:
- Connection
- Family
- Authenticity
- Growth
- Independence
- Compassion
- Health
- Courage
- Faith
- Creativity
- Self-respect
Values are different from goals. A goal is something we accomplish, while a value represents how we want to live.
For example, changing careers might be a goal, while growth, independence, or purpose may be the values underneath that decision.
Reexamining Expectations in Midlife
Many women might enter midlife carrying internal expectations, such as:
I should do more for my family.
I shouldn’t disappoint anyone.
I should be happy with what I have.
I should be able to handle everything.
Middle age can be an opportunity to pause and consider:
- When do I feel most like myself?
- What parts of myself have I neglected?
- What would I do differently if I weren’t afraid of disappointing someone?
- Which relationships deserve more of my energy?
- Where might I need stronger boundaries?
- What do I want the next chapter of my life to represent?
Living According to Your Values
Choosing a few core values and examining whether the way you spend your time reflects those values can provide important insight.
Middle age can be an opportunity to reevaluate what matters. It can also be a time to let go of expectations and establish healthier boundaries.
You do not have to completely reinvent your life. Sometimes meaningful change begins with one simple question:
“Given who I am today, how do I want to live from here?”
